Moishele Kapanski crawling out of a
hole in the wall after the liberation – Vilna, Poland, 1944
On 23-24 September, 1943, the Germans liquidated the Vilna ghetto.
Approximately 1,000 Jews remained and hid in the empty ghetto, but in
the two months following the liquidation, the majority of them were
caught. Of the remainder, only about 200 Jews survived the hunger and
terrible conditions, and were liberated on 13 July, 1944, when the Red
Army liberated Vilna. |
